Electrification is clearly the direction the market is heading—regulations are tightening, and the cost of battery packs is finally dropping to a point where a true luxury EV can compete on price as well as performance. From a technical standpoint, electric powertrains give us instant torque, a broader usable power band, and far more flexibility for chassis tuning. That means you can still deliver the acceleration and handling precision that high‑end buyers expect, while also offering a silent, zero‑emission experience that aligns with the growing eco‑conscious mindset. That said, the visceral appeal of a combustion engine—the roar, the shift feel, the smell of a hot exhaust—remains a core part of the luxury identity for many enthusiasts. Brands that ignore that heritage risk alienating a segment of their clientele who value the auditory and mechanical feedback as much as the speed itself. The smart approach is to treat the EV as a new platform for “engine sound engineering.” We’ve seen manufacturers synthesize realistic exhaust notes or even create entirely new soundscapes that enhance the cabin experience without compromising the electric advantage. Pair that with a manual or paddle‑shifted gearbox feel (even if it’s simulated) and you preserve the ritual of driving while still moving forward. The sweet spot, in my view, is a dual‑path strategy: keep a limited‑run, high‑performance internal‑combustion model for purists, while rolling out an electrified flagship that pushes the envelope on power, handling, and sustainability. This way the brand honors its legacy and gives the engineering team freedom to innovate. Over time, as EV technology continues to improve—especially in terms of thermal management and sound design—the electric flagship can become the new benchmark for luxury performance, and the combustion model can be retired without a sense of loss, because the driving pleasure will have been re‑defined rather than eliminated.
