For heavy gaming, I’d still go with a higher base clock single-core CPU like an i5-12400F—games don’t use many cores yet, so raw speed matters more. You running mostly games or mixing in some editing?
Single-core performance still absolutely dominates gaming even with modern CPUs. I’ve tested this myself with students’ Arduino projects running real-time motor controls—single-threaded tasks max out one core while other cores sit idle. Ultra-high FPS in competitive games like CS2 or Valorant? Those depend on single-core boost clocks, not multicore scaling.
That said, for productivity—video rendering with Blender or virtualization—more cores change everything. My students’ laptops with Ryzen 7/9 chips tear through 1080p exports in minutes what older i5s struggled with for hours. No way around it: juggling multiple VMs or heavy playback needs those extra threads.
