I went through the whole debate last year when I swapped my old 60 Hz TN panel for a 144 Hz IPS on my rig. The first game I tested was CS:GO, and the difference in smoothness was night‑and‑day – I could track fast crosshair movements without the jitter I’d grown used to. The input lag dropped from around 15 ms to sub‑5 ms after I paired the monitor with a 240 Hz‑capable GPU, so the low‑latency side of the equation definitely won me over for competitive shooters. A few months later I added a 34‑inch 21:9 ultrawide for my RPG/strategy sessions. The extra horizontal real‑estate is fantastic for immersing yourself in open‑world scenery, but I quickly noticed the same 144 Hz panel still suffered a bit more motion blur in fast‑paced FPS titles compared to my dedicated 144 Hz 16:9 monitor. Bottom line: if you primarily play competitive shooters, chase the highest refresh and lowest input lag; if you’re into immersive single‑player or simulation games, the ultrawide win is hard to beat. I keep both, switching depending on the genre.
