I'm putting together a $1500 system mainly for gaming and occasional video editing. My budget allows for a solid‑state drive for the OS and main apps, but I'm debating whether to allocate the remaining storage budget to a high‑capacity HDD or a faster, lower‑capacity one. How much does raw HDD speed actually impact game load times and editing workflow compared to sheer storage space? Are there scenarios where a larger, slower platter drive makes sense, or should I stick to the fastest SATA/SMR options available? Would you pair an HDD with an SSD cache, or just go all‑SSD? Looking for thoughts.
Should I prioritize HDD capacity over speed for a $1500 gaming build?

For gaming and video editing the SSD should host the OS, apps and the projects you’re actively working on, so a slower, high‑capacity 7200 RPM HDD is perfectly fine for bulk storage – load times only noticeably improve when the game itself is installed on the SSD. If you want a bit of extra speed without blowing the budget, a modest SSD cache or a mid‑size SSD for your most‑used games is a good compromise, but an all‑SSD build will always be the fastest.
