When you look at games that actually squeeze out extra cores (think newer titles built on Unreal 5 or Frostbite), the win is usually a modest 5‑15 % boost when you jump from a 6‑core/12‑thread chip at 4.0 GHz to an 8‑core/16‑thread part that’s a few hundred megahertz slower. The extra threads help the engine spread out things like physics, animation, and background streaming, but the sweet spot is still the combination of high IPC and a strong single‑core boost. By contrast, a “more cores is always better” mindset falls apart on older or poorly threaded games – they’ll sit on one or two cores and the extra silicon just sits idle, much like throwing a high‑capacity SSD into a system that’s bottlenecked by a 5400 RPM HDD. In those cases, you get more mileage from a CPU with fewer, faster cores (e.g., a 6‑core @ 4.6 GHz) than from an 8‑core @ 3.8 GHz. So, as a rule of thumb for a gaming‑only rig: aim for 6‑8 physical cores with a high boost clock and solid per‑core performance. Anything beyond 8 cores starts to see diminishing returns unless you also do heavy streaming, video encoding, or run multiple VMs alongside your games. If you need the extra cores for those side tasks, go for a 12‑core/24‑thread CPU, but for pure FPS/Action titles the 6‑core sweet spot (or a high‑clock 8‑core) will usually give you the best fps per dollar.
