Choosing a Mechanical Keyboard: What factors should I consider?

I'm thinking about getting a mechanical keyboard but feel overwhelmed by the options. I know there are different switch families, keycap materials, layouts and backlighting styles, yet I'm not sure which combination makes sense for everyday use versus gaming or programming. How do you usually narrow down the choice? Do you start with the switch feel and then look at build quality, or the opposite? What about ergonomics and size – tenkeyless vs full size – does it matter much? Any general method or checklist you follow when picking a board would help a lot. Thanks!
