I'm putting together a $1500 build and I'm stuck on the power supply choice. On one hand, I want a high efficiency rating (80 Plus Gold or Platinum) for lower heat and better power quality, but those units tend to be pricier. On the other hand, a fully modular cable system would keep the case tidy and improve airflow, yet some people swear non‑modular or semi‑modular units are fine for a mid‑range build. How much wattage headroom should I leave for future GPU upgrades? Is it worth paying extra for the highest efficiency and full modularity, or can I safely go with a solid 80 Plus Bronze, non‑modular unit? Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations.

As a total PSU rookie, I’d say aim for about 20‑30% headroom (e.g., a 650W unit for a 500W‑ish build) and grab an 80‑Plus Gold – the heat and noise savings are worth the few extra bucks, plus full‑modular keeps my case from looking like spaghetti 🍝. If you’re really pinching cash, a solid Bronze 550W non‑modular will run, but you’ll miss out on tidy airflow and future‑proofing 😅.
