Recently looking into replacing my old power supply and noticed some models have 'modular' vs 'fixed' cables. The modular ones cost more but seem easier to manage inside the case. From a technical standpoint, does going for modular really make a difference in performance or efficiency, or is it mostly about cable clutter? I went for a modular PSU last year when I built a compact ITX system for a friend—no room for cable chaos. Saved me a ton of hassle, seriously, the airflow was noticeably smoother because nothing was blocking the fans. At first, I was skeptical about the efficiency claim, but after checking with my Kill-A-Watt, the difference was negligible between that modular unit and a fixed-cable model I’d used before.
That said, if you’re rocking a mid-tower with decent cable management space, the premium might not be worth it. I splurged on a top-tier semi-modular unit, and while it looks clean, my power bill didn’t change. Just saved me the headache of wrestling with wires. If clutter bothers you though, the mental peace is worth the extra $20-30.
