When you’re pushing a CPU and GPU past stock clocks you’ll want a PSU that can comfortably cover the peak draw plus a safety margin—usually 20‑30 % above your calculated load. In practice that means if your build peaks around 450 W, a 550‑600 W unit is the sweet spot. The 80 PLUS tier then becomes more about efficiency and heat than raw power. I ran a Bronze‑rated 550 W from a few years back and noticed the PSU fan hitting higher speeds under load, which added a bit of extra noise and heat inside the case. Switching to a Gold‑rated 650 W for my current overclocked rig cut the fan noise dramatically and the power bill dropped by a few dollars a month—nothing earth‑shattering, but over a few years it adds up and the PSU stays cooler, which helps longevity. Modular cables are a real time‑saver, especially in tight builds or when you’re routing cables for airflow. With a fully modular unit I can drop the unused 12 V rails and keep the interior tidy, which also improves cooling for the components. Bottom line: aim for a PSU that’s at least 20 % over your max draw, pick Gold or higher if you can afford it (the efficiency gain and lower heat are worth it for an overclocked system), and go fully modular for easier assembly and better airflow. This combo gives you the stability you need now and saves a bit of energy (and heat) in the long run.
