How does a limited-slip differential work in high-performance vehicles, and what impact does it have on acceleration and cornering stability at very high speeds? Is upgrading to one worthwhile for road cars, or is it primarily a track-only feature?

A year ago, I had a limited-slip differential installed in my tuned Audi RS3—initially out of pure curiosity, to see if all those track myths even made sense on the road. The thing saw its first real-world action right away on the twisty route between the Alps and my hometown. What struck me immediately was how much more direct the acceleration from a standstill felt, since power wasn’t just wasted spinning up wheels. But the real surprise came at higher speeds on country roads—especially during fast, consecutive turns like a roundabout. Suddenly, the car held a much more stable line than it did with the open differential. The difference isn’t a quantum leap, but it’s noticeable enough that I don’t want to go back. It’s overkill for daily driving, sure, but when you really floor it or push the limits, it just feels… reassuring. The upgrade at least proved one thing to me: yeah, it makes a difference—even without a racetrack.
