When I worked on a similar project for a late-model Cadillac, the first thing I did was take baseline measurements of the car’s current ride—both ride height and spring rates—using a simple laser level and a spring-scale test on the front and rear springs. Knowing where you start lets you gauge how much you’ve changed without guessing. From there, I swapped the stock 2-wire gas shocks for adjustable monotube units; they give you a clean way to dial in compression and rebound independently. A good rule of thumb is to start with slightly softer compression (about 10–15% less than stock) to soak up those long-haul bumps, then tighten the rebound a touch so the car still feels planted through corners. For the springs, I kept the original spring rates but added a small progressive front spring set (about 5 kN extra at the top of the coil). This added a bit of sport feel without sacrificing comfort because the lower portion of the spring still flexes on rough pavement. If you’re willing to trade a few inches of ride height, a mild lowering kit (½-inch front, ¼-inch rear) can improve body roll control without making the ride harsh—just be sure the front isn’t too low, or you’ll start scraping wheel arches on speed bumps. Tire choice is the silent hero. I upgraded from 245/45R20 to a 245/50R20 with a high-speed-rated, touring-focused compound. The extra sidewall height gives you more cushion on uneven roads, while the modern silica-based tread still delivers crisp steering response. Pair the tires with a proper tire pressure map—run the front a few psi lower than the rear on the highway (around 32 psi front, 35 psi rear) to soften the front end a bit, then bump both up a little for rainy or rough surfaces. Finally, I logged all changes in a simple spreadsheet: ride height, spring rate, shock settings, tire pressure, and subjective notes on comfort vs. handling after each test drive. That way, you can see the incremental effect of each tweak and roll back anything that feels too harsh. When the road switches from smooth interstate to pothole-ridden city streets, the adjustable shocks let you switch between “comfort” and “sport” presets on the fly, keeping the sedan comfortable for the long haul while still feeling alive in corners.
