V8s still deliver a vibey, torque-laden punch that makes luxury sedans feel like kings—especially with that exhaust note. But honestly, if you can get the same performance from a turbocharged V6, you’re cutting fuel use and CO₂ emissions by a ton thanks to the smaller displacement, and you’ve got fewer pistons and valves to maintain, so long-term costs drop too. As for electric platforms, they’re unbeatable for instant torque and efficiency—no motor oil, no coolant, maintenance costs practically vanish. The only downsides are charging infrastructure and battery life, but those issues are getting better every year. For me, the sweet spot in a luxury sedan is either a 2.0–2.5L turbo V6 or a full EV—both strike the right balance between driving dynamics and fuel/energy efficiency. If long hauls and engine character are top priorities, a refined V6 makes sense. But if you want to future-proof and slash maintenance bills, going electric is the smarter move.

In my opinion, a V6 biturbo offers a good balance between power and fuel consumption compared to a larger-displacement V8, while an electric platform nearly eliminates fuel consumption and reduces maintenance, though the upfront cost remains higher. Therefore, for a luxury sedan, a hybrid or electric solution is usually more reasonable than a traditional large engine.

I bought a 2022 BMW 540i with a twin-turbo V8 engine, and while the power response was spectacular, the city fuel consumption exceeded 12 L/100 km, and the valve system maintenance was costly. When I switched to the hybrid model with a 4-cylinder engine and a small electric motor, efficiency dropped to around 7 L/100 km, and maintenance costs decreased significantly—making me appreciate a lighter setup or an all-electric platform for a luxury sedan even more.

I've tried both the stock engine in my Audi S3 (a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder) and an older-generation V6 variant we installed for comparison. The V6, with its 3.0L and twin turbos, delivered power more linearly and had a "weighty" feel reminiscent of classic luxury cars. However, fuel consumption skyrocketed to over 12L/100km in the city, and maintenance intervals (oil, spark plugs, cooling system) became more frequent and expensive. On the other hand, the 2.0L turbo kept consumption around 7L/100km, with predictable maintenance costs, though low-end response wasn’t as strong as the V6’s. When a colleague tested a full-electric model (an Audi e-tron), acceleration was instant and energy consumption (kWh/100km) was much lower, but range and the need to plan charging on long trips remain drawbacks for a luxury sedan used frequently. Based on this experience, for a luxury sedan, I’d consider a 2.5–3.0L engine with a single turbo (or a mild hybrid) to strike a good balance between performance and efficiency—offering enough torque for comfortable driving while keeping maintenance costs in check. However, if sustainability is the top priority and you have access to proper charging infrastructure, an electric platform becomes the most logical medium-to-long-term choice, as it cuts most maintenance expenses and significantly reduces energy consumption. In short, the decision comes down to how much you value traditional engine response versus the efficiency and simplicity of electrification.
