ESP uses multiple sensors to detect the moment of skidding. The yaw and lateral acceleration sensor measures side acceleration, while the steering angle sensor signal is compared to the desired direction of travel. Combined with the wheel speed sensor, the system detects when the vehicle is skidding sideways or deviating strongly from its direction of travel. As soon as this discrepancy is exceeded, the control unit (EDC – Electronic Control Unit) initiates intervention. The brake force distribution works similarly to ABS but in a more targeted manner: the ESP control unit commands individual brake calipers to increase braking force only on the wheels that can stabilize the vehicle. In the case of understeer, the brake is applied to the front axle, and in the case of oversteer, to the rear axle. This generates a correcting torque that brings the vehicle back onto the desired path. Compared to a pure stability assistant without brake modulation, such as the classic traction control system (TCS), ESP acts much faster because it not only reduces drive torque but also actively brakes. The key components are therefore the sensor system (yaw, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering angle sensor, wheel speed sensors), the EDC, and the hydraulic brake modulation unit. In case of malfunctions, the system usually causes the hazard warning lights to flash. As a beginner, you can check whether the ABS sensors are clean and free of dirt – this is often the cause of false alarms. You can also briefly test the function by steering the vehicle slightly into a curve at low speed and then countersteering; a slight braking noise from the affected wheels is a good sign that ESP is working. Typical problems include defective sensors, low brake fluid level, or a damaged brake module. A quick look at the error memory via the OBD-II port can already provide clarity. If the ESP warning light flashes continuously, you should first clean the ABS sensors and top up the brake fluid; this often resolves the issue without immediately going to the workshop.

The ESP system uses the yaw rate sensor, steering angle sensor, and wheel speed sensors to detect oversteering or understeering, then selectively applies braking force to individual wheels via the control unit. On my newer car, I’ve already checked the ABS sensors and brake pressure sensor multiple times—faulty sensors are the most common cause of malfunctions. A quick OBD scan along with inspecting the brake pads and ABS connector usually clears things up fast.

ESP works on the principle of a small "air traffic controller" for the vehicle: The rotational speed and yaw sensors (yaw rate sensor) measure the current rotational movement of the car, while the steering angle sensor detects where the driver is steering. The control unit (ECU) compares the target yaw rate, calculated from steering angle and speed, with the actual yaw rate. If the actual value deviates significantly from the target curve—this is the typical "skidding"—the system immediately initiates countermeasures. To correct this, ESP uses both the brakes on individual wheels and engine throttling. In understeer (oversteer), the inner rear wheels are braked, while in oversteer (understeer), the outer front or rear wheels are braked. It’s also worth checking the brake fluid and brake pads—if the ABS/brake light comes on, there’s often a mechanical brake issue that also affects ESP. A simple OBD scan usually provides the exact fault code (e.g., C1234 for the yaw rate sensor), which can be interpreted even without a professional workshop. In summary: ESP is a interplay of sensors, control unit, and brakes. As soon as skidding is detected, it intervenes instantly via the brakes and engine power. Keeping the sensors clean and checking basic components when error messages appear can rule out many malfunctions before visiting the workshop.
