In my experience with both rally and street cars, the rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup is usually the best choice for a high-performance car that’s also street-legal. A rear-mounted engine allows for a more balanced weight distribution (around 50/50), which translates to cleaner steering response and a stronger "grip" feeling when entering corners—something that’s hard to achieve with a front-wheel drive (FWD) setup. Plus, the rear differential is easier to tune for controlled drifting or strong launches, which many track enthusiasts appreciate. Of course, all-wheel drive (AWD) has its charm when you need maximum traction in variable conditions (snow, rain, or slippery surfaces). However, the added cost—both in purchase price and maintenance—as well as the extra weight in the front axle, usually come at the expense of agility and the pure joy of direct driving. If your main goal is to enjoy sporty driving on dry roads, RWD gives you the best balance between dynamics, suspension tuning ease, and the ability to modify the differential to match your driving style. As for FWD, I’d only recommend it if your budget is very tight or if you need a car that’s easy to handle in city traffic. The lack of grip during acceleration and in fast corners, along with the tendency to understeer, make FWD less appealing for a project aiming to be truly "performance-oriented." In short, for a street car with track character, my choice is RWD for its balance, driving feel, and tuning flexibility.

The weight distribution ends up closer to 50/50, especially on a lightweight chassis like a SEAT León Cup, and that translates to better agility and easier tuning of suspension settings. That said, I don’t discount AWD when traction is a priority—for rainy climates or for a car that will see a lot of launch-control runs, an AWD system can shave a few tenths off the 0-60 time and keep the tires in their sweet spot. The trade-off is extra weight up front, higher complexity, and a cost bump that can quickly eat into your budget for other upgrades (brakes, engine swaps, etc.). If your primary goal is pure driving pleasure and you want a platform that will respond well to chassis tweaks, RWD is the sweet spot.
