Should a future Fiat model be equipped with a combustion engine, hybrid, or fully electric? What advantages and disadvantages do you see in each option? Share your opinion and justify your choice. Consider aspects like range, maintenance effort, driving fun, and impact on city traffic. Do you think there are technical limits that would rule out one of these options? We look forward to a lively discussion and your reasoning. Please vote and briefly explain your choice.

For a future Fiat model, I’d personally recommend a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). From my experience converting my VW Golf to a smaller turbocharged hybrid setup, I’ve found that while a fully electric vehicle is great for city acceleration, it quickly loses range on longer trips, leaving you dependent on charging infrastructure—which isn’t ideal for Fiat models, often used for short to medium distances. A pure combustion engine is still the most flexible option, but it comes with higher maintenance and emissions, which is becoming increasingly problematic in urban areas. The PHEV offers the best of both worlds: in pure electric mode, it’s silent and responsive in city traffic, with a range of around 50–80 km covering most daily commutes. Once the battery is depleted, the system seamlessly switches to the gasoline engine, eliminating range anxiety and making long trips effortless. Maintenance falls somewhere in between—less wear on the engine, but an additional electric drivetrain that needs monitoring. Technically, there are no major limitations with a PHEV as long as the battery fits efficiently in Fiat’s compact chassis. That’s why I see the plug-in hybrid as the most practical solution for a modern Fiat model designed to handle both city driving and occasional long-distance trips.

A couple of years ago, I bought a Fiat 500 hybrid because I lived in a high-traffic area and wanted to cut fuel consumption without losing the range of a gasoline engine. In traffic jams, the electric motor took over 100%, and consumption dropped to less than 4L/100km, while outside the city, the gasoline engine let me make long trips without worrying about charging. What I liked most was the hybrid engine’s response: the instant torque delivery of the electric motor combined with the power of the gasoline engine gave a very pleasant "pull," something I never felt in my old 1.2L engine. As for maintenance, it’s still similar to a traditional car, except for the battery, which hasn’t given any trouble so far and has already covered over 80,000 km without losing significant capacity. If I had to choose a new model now, I’d go for a fully electric version, provided the charging network is dense enough in the urban area where I drive. An autonomy of around 350 km is more than enough for my daily commutes, and the cost of electricity is much lower than gasoline. Plus, the absence of a combustion engine eliminates noise and vibrations, making driving much more pleasant and clean. The only limitation I see is the fast-charging infrastructure outside the city; until that improves, a hybrid remains the most balanced option for combining range, low maintenance, and good performance in urban traffic.
