Hyundai has already proven that its batteries can handle high-power chargers: the Ioniq 5 with the 77.4 kWh version reaches 350 kW, allowing it to go from 10% to 80% in under 18 minutes. However, according to the latest IEA report, only around 5% of DC chargers in Europe exceed 150 kW, meaning the real infrastructure still doesn’t match the cars’ capabilities. This gap particularly hurts users who take intercity trips and need a denser network of fast-charging points. On the other hand, energy efficiency remains a key factor for everyday range. The Ioniq 6, with a drag coefficient of Cd = 0.24 and an average consumption of 14 kWh/100 km, achieves around 600 km WLTP without needing to charge at top speed. Improving aerodynamics, reducing weight, and optimizing the battery pack’s thermal management can add dozens of kilometers per charge and extend battery life—something many owners value more than quick charging speeds. In my view, Hyundai should adopt a hybrid strategy: strengthen partnerships with operators like Ionity, Fastned, or new local networks to ensure ≥150 kW charger coverage on key corridors (Germany, France, UK) while continuing to refine model efficiency. A pilot deployment of 350 kW stations on high-demand routes would help validate real demand and, as a bonus, give customers the charging speed their vehicles already support.

On my last trip to Madrid, the lack of fast-charging points left me stranded halfway through the journey, and I realized that even though my Hyundai Ioniq had good range, it relied more on a strong charging network than internal improvements. That’s why I think Hyundai should prioritize expanding fast-charging infrastructure across Europe.
