I'm looking to buy a used car but I'm not sure what to prioritize when assessing long-term reliability. Should I focus more on service history, mileage, age, or known common issues for certain engine types? How important are factors like previous ownership, maintenance records, and overall wear on components such as suspension or braking? Any guidelines or checklists you recommend would help me make a smarter decision. What does the community usually look at first?

Buddy, I think the first thing you should look at is the service history. If the car has been regularly maintained, no matter the mileage, it won’t cause long-term issues; but if records are missing, even low mileage becomes questionable in terms of reliability. Age is also a factor, but for models up to 10-12 years old, the engine design is more critical. For example, with 2.0 TDIs, check for common injector and turbo issues and note the known faults listed in the "red book" for that model. Secondly, how the previous owner used the car matters too. Vehicles that frequently change hands or are often rented tend to have worn-out suspension and brakes because stop-and-go traffic and tight parking really take a toll. So, inspect the suspension dampers, springs, and brake pads, and if needed, negotiate a lower price. Also, check if the transmission or differential oil has been changed and if the oil filter is clean—these details are crucial for longevity. In short, when you evaluate service records, mileage, known weaknesses of the model, and suspension-brake condition together, you’ll basically find a car that’s "well-maintained, free of known issues, and suitable for your driving style." Honestly, I’ve bought a few cars this way and never regretted it.
