What’s your ideal off-road setup for a Jeep-type vehicle?

In a Jeep-style 4x4, do you prefer a high suspension for greater travel, rear-wheel drive with lockable differentials for better grip, or a combination of large-diameter tires to overcome obstacles? Indicate the option you would choose and briefly explain the reason for your choice, whether for performance, comfort, or versatility across different terrains.

For me, the ideal combination is a high suspension paired with large-diameter tires. The ride height of the suspension allows it to absorb bumps and slides without the body scraping the ground, while 33-35 inch (or larger) tires add grip and the ability to traverse rocks and loose sand. In comparative tests, a Jeep with adjustable suspension and 33-inch tires outperformed a model with rear-wheel drive and locking differentials but stock 27-inch tires on a mixed mud-rock trail; the time taken was nearly 15% faster, and driver comfort remained high thanks to the suspension’s absorption. On the other hand, a rear-wheel-drive setup with locking differentials is still useful on very slippery surfaces, but its advantage is quickly lost if the suspension is low and obstacles exceed the tire diameter. That’s why I prefer flexibility: high suspension covers most terrains, and when I need extra grip in mud or snow, locking differentials remain a complementary tool I can activate without sacrificing ride height. In short, the high suspension + large tires combo offers the best versatility and comfort in most off-road environments.
