For me, the ideal combination is a high suspension paired with large-diameter tires. The ride height of the suspension allows it to absorb bumps and slides without the body scraping the ground, while 33-35 inch (or larger) tires add grip and the ability to traverse rocks and loose sand. In comparative tests, a Jeep with adjustable suspension and 33-inch tires outperformed a model with rear-wheel drive and locking differentials but stock 27-inch tires on a mixed mud-rock trail; the time taken was nearly 15% faster, and driver comfort remained high thanks to the suspension’s absorption.
On the other hand, a rear-wheel-drive setup with locking differentials is still useful on very slippery surfaces, but its advantage is quickly lost if the suspension is low and obstacles exceed the tire diameter.
