When considering buying an SUV, it's important to first clarify what it will be used for. Daily city driving, long family vacations, or off-road adventures require different features. The choice of fuel type, engine displacement, and drivetrain is determined by road conditions and budget. Ergonomic factors such as interior comfort, cargo space, and ride height should also be taken into account. Additionally, it's helpful to evaluate maintenance costs, fuel efficiency, and long-term depreciation. What priority order do you usually follow in these matters?

A couple of years ago, when I swapped my old hatchback for a midsize SUV, the first thing I did was map out the daily use cases. I’m a city commuter most weekdays, but on weekends I haul the kids and a couple of ski bags to the mountains, so I needed a vehicle that could comfortably fit five plus gear and still feel manageable in traffic. I started by ranking interior space and cargo capacity above everything else—the rear seats fold flat and the boot gives me over 600 L, which was a non-negotiable for my family trips. Next on the list was the drivetrain. Since we live in an area with heavy snow, an all-wheel-drive system became a must, even if it added a few hundred euros to the price. After that, I looked at fuel consumption and maintenance costs; I went for a turbocharged four-cylinder instead of a larger V6 because the real-world fuel figures were about 8 L/100 km, and the service intervals were longer and cheaper. Finally, I checked depreciation trends and found that the model I chose held its value reasonably well, which helped justify the upfront expense. So my priority chain was: cargo/space → AWD → fuel efficiency/maintenance → resale value. It worked out well for both city drives and those weekend mountain getaways.
