I'm thinking about setting up a Suzuki for a short-distance rally and would like to know the key steps you consider essential. In general, what aspects of the suspension, transmission, and engine setup should be prioritized to achieve a good balance between grip and speed? Additionally, what types of electronic or traction control adjustments are common in these scenarios? I'm also interested in knowing what tire calibration methods and track testing recommendations you suggest before the competition. How do you approach this?

A year ago, I prepped my Suzuki Swift for a 5 km rally. First, I swapped the stock dampers for adjustable coilovers, stiffening the rear and keeping the front slightly softer to improve grip in tight corners. Then I tweaked the gearbox ratios to shorter ones and fitted a limited-slip differential so power delivery wouldn’t lose traction during acceleration. Finally, I tuned the ECU with a traction map that cuts torque between 3,000–4,000 rpm and did several scrub laps to dial in the perfect tire pressure before race day.

Compared to a stock Suzuki, you should tune the suspension more like a short-course rally Subaru—firmer damping and a slightly lower ride height will give you more stability. The gear ratios should be shorter than stock, similar to a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, to push top speed, and a light traction control with a wheel speed sensor can help here. For the tires, adjust the pressure by 4–5% compared to a normal road car and do a few test runs to find the optimal grip level.
