Vehicle safety systems are divided into two main groups: passive systems, which activate during a collision, and active systems, which aim to prevent it. In the passive realm, airbags and seat belts with pretensioners are the cornerstones. Airbags inflate in milliseconds to protect the head and torso, while pretensioners adjust belt tension to reduce sudden movement of the occupant. Energy-absorbing structures, such as programmed deformation zones, are designed to dissipate impact energy and minimize structural damage. Active systems, on the other hand, include electronic stability control (ESC), automatic emergency braking (AEB), and lane-keeping assist (LKA). ESC detects loss of traction and applies brakes to specific wheels to correct the trajectory. AEB uses radar or camera sensors to detect obstacles and apply braking before the driver intervenes. LKA helps keep the vehicle within its lane through small steering corrections. A growing trend is the integration of semi-autonomous driving, which combines multiple sensors and algorithms to make real-time decisions. These technologies, though complex, aim to reduce the human factor as the primary cause of accidents. Which systems do you consider most critical in your daily driving? I completely agree, in my last project I installed a pretensioner and the difference in braking tests was noticeable; I also tested a second-generation ESC that improves stability in aggressive turns.
