Which do you think gives better results: manual long exposure or the stacked imaging method? Common challenges with manual shooting include light pollution, focus precision, and ISO noise. Stacked imaging, on the other hand, offers the advantage of collecting more light but comes with the hassle of processing demands and software requirements. Which would you invest in and why?

I've captured the Milky Way both ways—once with a single 30-second RAW shot at ISO 6400 on my Sony A7 II (F/2.8, 14mm) out in the Mojave, and then again with a 60-frame stack (each 25s @ ISO 1600) the following night. The single shot looked "meh," the noise in the shadows was harsh, and the stars trailed slightly thanks to my rock-solid but not perfect star tracker. The stacked version turned out cleaner than I expected—the noise floor dropped noticeably, and I could stretch the histogram much further without that nasty grain. Yeah, the stacking process (DeepSkyStacker + PixInsight) ate up 90 minutes of my time, but the result was worth it when I printed it at 24×36 and my coffee shop buddy asked if I used a medium-format camera. These days, I split the difference: a quick snap if I'm chasing a comet at 2 a.m., full stack for anything I actually want to frame on the wall.

I always invest in the stacked imaging method, especially for faint objects like the Milky Way. No matter how sensitive the camera sensor is, the stacking technique automatically helps reduce light pollution and increases the chance of getting a clear result. When I first tried it, I was disappointed by the light pollution, so I chose Stacked—and the results were truly amazing. Of course, you need the right equipment and a bit of patience for the setup. The processing can be quite time-consuming, but it’s worth it for the detailed, low-noise image you end up with. Manual long exposures do produce great results, especially with a tripod and remote shutter, but they don’t offer the same consistent quality as stacking.

I also dabbled in astrophotography for a long time, especially being fascinated by the "stacked" approach. Last year, I was in the Canary Islands and tried capturing the Andromeda Galaxy with my telescope. My initial attempts involved 2-minute exposures by hand, but due to light pollution and sensor heating, the images were almost unusable. Then I switched to the time-lapse method: I took 200 RAW files, each 10 seconds long, and stacked them to produce data equivalent to 30 minutes. Suddenly, the details in the dark regions emerged, and the ISO noise was almost gone. While the stacked method seemed slow at first, it changed everything for me in subsequent projects. Now, it's possible to spend an entire night in the middle of light-polluted city centers and still capture something worthwhile. Of course, you need the right equipment and software (I use PixInsight), but the results are well worth the effort.

I'd prefer the stacked method, especially in areas with light pollution where you can get cleaner results. Shooting manually can be tedious, and as you mentioned, focusing and ISO noise can be a challenge for any photographer. Even though it requires more effort, are the results really worth it?

Stacked imaging definitely outperforms long-exposure manual shooting, especially in light-polluted city environments. With manual, you focus so carefully that you almost always lose some IQ in the process. With stacking, once you set up the frame and let autofocus do its job, the software takes care of the rest and optimizes the data you’ve captured. Stacking also has the upper hand with ISO noise—you can shoot at low ISO with long exposures and then stack to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, rather than cranking up ISO in a single shot. With single-shot manual, even under the best conditions, you’d struggle to get past ISO 3200. Of course, stacking comes with its downsides: you lose portability and have to put in the effort to set up the right pipeline. Ultimately, if you want something quick and portable for sky photography, manual might be the way to go. But if you're after high-quality, low-light detail, investing in stacking makes way more sense. My setup? Just a stack of multiple 30-second exposures—results are insane.
