Genetic engineering-developed foods can be compared to synthetic fertilizers, which became widespread in agriculture at the beginning of the 20th century and increased yields tenfold. Both synthetic fertilizers and GMOs offer solutions to urgent needs such as population growth and meeting food demand, but their long-term environmental and health impacts are not yet fully understood. While the intensive use of synthetic fertilizers increases soil acidity and disrupts microbial balance, GMOs are also observed to pose a risk of exerting pressure on natural diversity in ecosystems.
On the other hand, both synthetic fertilizers and GMO seeds play a critical role in adapting agriculture to climate change. For example, drought-resistant varieties of GMO corn can make agricultural production sustainable in water-scarce regions. Similarly, without the increased yields from synthetic fertilizers, it might not have been possible to feed the world's current population. So, both technologies are double-edged swords: while they respond to urgent needs, irresponsible use can lead to long-term problems.
Hmm, what about this? I think the biggest advantage of GMOs in agricultural production is efficiency.
