While expanding wind and solar capacity alone strengthens the generation side, pairing it with large-scale lithium or even redox-flow batteries ensures stable grid integration and reduces the need for backup power plants, which are typically run on CO₂-intensive gas.
Another factor is the EU’s Emissions Trading System, which is broadly comparable to California’s Cap-and-Trade but imposes significantly stricter emission caps. These tighter limits not only drive investment in renewable technologies but also push industries to adopt efficient CO₂ reduction methods like Direct-Air-Capture faster.
