Why are traces of life always being sought on Mars? What is its geological structure like? What happened in the planet's past to make it resemble Earth? What methods are used in these search efforts? In your opinion, what could be the most promising findings?

One time while working in JavaScript, I’d get this thought in my head like, “Why is it always Mars?” Then I came across a non-astronaut asking, “While we can’t even protect our own planet, why focus on another one?” But after seeing photos of dried-up riverbeds on Mars, I started wondering if we’re looking there to understand our own past. Maybe understanding other planets is the first step in taking better care of our home.

First, its geological history and climate features that may have once resembled Earth’s draw scientists in. The planet boasts valleys, craters, and sedimentary rocks that strongly suggest water existed there billions of years ago—raising hopes that life might have thrived there in the past. But here’s the real question: Why Mars and not Venus? Venus may have had a similar past, perhaps even oceans. Mars has the advantage of being accessible—we can land on its surface and analyze soil samples directly. Venus, with its crushing atmospheric pressure and scorching temperatures, remains a deadly environment for rovers, making Mars the more practical focus for exploration. So, how does studying Mars’ geology reveal parallels with Earth? The presence of water ice on Mars indicates that hydrological cycles were once active, suggesting the planet may have had an atmosphere more like Earth’s in the distant past. Yet, its predominantly carbon dioxide atmosphere and lack of a magnetic field make it a far less hospitable place for life today. As a scientist who remains cautious, I have to acknowledge that any signs of past life on Mars would likely be ancient, and the planet itself is not currently habitable. The most promising findings so far—organic molecules detected by rovers like Curiosity and Perseverance—hint at the building blocks of life, but they don’t confirm its existence. Still, I can’t help but wonder if the real drivers behind Mars’ intense study are political and economic. Space exploration carries immense prestige and potential future commercial value, and these factors may be fueling humanity’s fascination with the Red Planet more than we realize.
