Fusion has always seemed like the reaction that powers stars, but in practice it’s always felt abstract to me. Watching a video about the ITER project finally made it click: magnetic confinement, giant solenoid coils, exotic fuels like helium-3—it’s wild. Right now, the biggest hurdle seems to be sustaining the plasma. Even superconductor magnets aren’t durable enough for 100-million-degree plasmas. I freelance by offering renewable-energy projects to clients, so I keep an eye on efficiency numbers. The current fusion energy gain (Q value) record is 1.54—meaning we only get 54% more energy out than we put in. For a commercial plant, we’d need at least 10 times that. MIT’s SPARC project is aiming for Q=10 by 2025, so maybe we’ll see a real breakthrough soon. But as I said, plasma physics is one thing—materials science might end up being the real game-changer.
