Which do you think makes more sense for large-scale energy production in the long term: nuclear power plants, or natural gas combi boilers for local heating/sectoral needs? Based on the key differences (high capacity factor, emissions, infrastructure dependency, etc.), share your opinion and reasoning.

Last year I rented a tiny office in a computer shop on the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland, and suddenly everything in my systems started freezing. It was –15 °C outside, and when the boiler shut down the temperature inside the office dropped 5 °C in just ten minutes. I inspected the gas boiler on the spot, wondering if it had a “cold,” and realized the thermostat was broken—it was a 15‑year‑old unit I’d neglected to maintain. The repairman I called from the local supplier said, “If you’re going to get through this winter, switching to the heating system at a nuclear plant would have made more sense.” I asked, “We don’t have a nuclear plant, but is there any government grant to replace the boiler?” He replied, “There isn’t anything like that; you’ll have to replace the boiler yourself.” In the end I switched to a heat pump, because after a neighbor’s tip I compared the efficiency of electric heating—I saw that a nuclear plant runs at about a 90 % capacity factor for electricity, while a gas boiler only manages around 80 %. Even on a small scale, the stability and efficiency of the energy source directly affect quality of life. If you need to heat thousands of homes simultaneously, a continuously operating, high‑capacity system like a nuclear plant makes more sense—especially when you consider that emissions are close to zero.
