What do you think about the ever-increasing platform fees?

Lately, almost every platform has raised its subscription prices. Even sticking to just one membership now takes up a significant chunk of my monthly budget. What do you think is driving this? Are they just focusing on price hikes, or are they also trying to improve content quality? Do you prefer cutting down to a few platforms and ignoring the rest, or do you want to keep up with every new service that comes out? What’s your approach?

I think the biggest reason for these price hikes is the constant pressure on platforms to produce new content. Netflix, Disney+, they’re all starting to look the same, and I feel like they keep raising prices under the excuse of “better content.” Honestly, I was focused solely on Netflix not long ago, but when the price went up I switched to YouTube Premium—at least I wanted the video quality to improve. Now I’m focusing on two services: one for foreign series and movies, and the other for local platforms. It’s hard to allocate budget for the rest, especially when you’re not even going to spend money on a single series. I used to subscribe whenever a new show came out, but I can’t afford that luxury anymore.

Man, I think the real reason behind these price hikes is that platforms are now trying to grab “whatever they can get their hands on.” Back in the day there was no monopoly on the market; everyone competed with their own quality content. But now almost everyone is focused on increasing the number of platforms they own—Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ are all doing publishing and studio work at the same time. That inflates their budgets, and of course the prices follow. When it comes to content quality, honestly, bro, sometimes it feels like they’re saying “let the price go up while the content stays basic.” For example, I’ve started asking myself, “why am I paying a 150‑lira monthly subscription to watch a decent movie on Netflix?” Sure, they’ve got a couple of brilliant series by luck, but overall the content feels stagnant. I’ve done the most sensible thing for me and seriously cut down the number of platforms. I used to juggle five services at once; now I’ve decided to stick with just Netflix and Disney+. Why? Because my budget can’t afford more, and I can already find the best stuff on those two. When a new platform shows up, I don’t let it upset that balance—I only check it out if I need it and the price makes sense.

As we discussed before, bro, they’re saying Netflix’s recent price hike has led to a serious drop in subscriber numbers. Do you think there’s a boost in content quality that justifies these price increases, or is it just about printing money?
