I've been hearing AMD pushing RDNA a lot lately, but I'm not entirely sure what it actually means beyond the buzzword. Is it just a fancy name for their GPUs, or does it change how graphics rendering works? How does it compare to older architectures like GCN?

Well, look, I switched to AMD in 2016 with an RX 480, and honestly, the jump from GCN to RDNA was noticeable from day one. Going from a Hawaii with 4GB to a Polaris (RDNA 1) was like seeing a before-and-after in power efficiency and how it handled shaders. Before with GCN, you had to program in a stricter way so you wouldn’t waste watts like crazy, but with RDNA, resources were just used more efficiently without all the headaches. I’m telling you because I saw temperatures drop without losing performance in games like The Witcher 3—something unthinkable with my old 290X. And then came RDNA 2 with the RX 6000 series, and the leap is even bigger. If RDNA 1 already felt like a major change, now with that "compute unit" architecture based on CUs working more in parallel and that near-infinite cache, games run smoother with less voltage. Comparing my RX 5700 XT to an RX 6800 in games like Cyberpunk, the difference in smoothness—even with ray tracing—is insane. I mean, it’s not just marketing: RDNA really has changed how everything is rendered, making every watt count way more than before.
