I'm building a new system, but choosing a motherboard is really confusing me. There are terms like BIOS, VRM, chipset—what do these actually do? Also, in what situations should we focus on which features? For example, if I'm not planning to overclock, is the chipset choice really important? Can you help?

BIOS and VRM are the core components you should understand before making your choice, so you can shop with confidence. BIOS is the heart of your system; it manages how your motherboard communicates with your hardware and oversees the boot process. If you plan to upgrade later (say, installing a more powerful CPU) or want to take advantage of the latest features, make sure the BIOS is regularly updated. VRM, on the other hand, is the voltage regulator module that powers your CPU. The better the VRM quality, the more stable your overclocking will be, and the longer you can sustain high performance. As for the chipset, if you're not planning to overclock, you don’t need to worry too much. Most modern chipsets (like B650 or Z790) already offer similar performance. The main differences usually come down to supported USB or PCIe versions. For example, if you're using a single PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD, a chipset that supports it is all you need. But if you plan to add multiple drives, a 10G Ethernet card, or other high-speed components later, check the chipset’s features. In my opinion, the best approach is to see if it meets your current needs first.
