When choosing a motherboard, we usually look at the price-to-performance ratio, but there are things we might overlook. For example, if you plan to upgrade your CPU or GPU in the future, the socket type and PCIe version the motherboard supports are crucial. Factors like the number of RAM slots, M.2 slots, and VRM quality also directly impact long-term performance and stability. What do you prioritize? Or do you just go for "a decent one at a reasonable price"?

Buddy, the real deciding factor for me is future-proofing. Like, I switched to AM4 a few years back because it was well-priced and clearly designed to support the Ryzen 5000 series down the line. Looking back now, I’m really glad I did—no regrets at all. So when you’re picking parts, always check the latest socket and chipset the CPU supports. No matter how much you plan, having to replace the motherboard in 4-5 years is a real pain. Then there’s M.2 slots—seem like overkill but are actually super important. My board had two: one with an SSD and the other empty, but even just having the option made things way easier. As for VRMs, if you’re picking a CPU that fits your current budget, you might not need to worry too much. But if you’re going for high performance, definitely go for a motherboard with solid VRMs. Otherwise, you’ll be dealing with voltage drops and overheating forever.

M.2 slots' placement and count on the motherboard are apparently important, but should SSDs be mounted vertically or horizontally? VRM topic always confuses me too, how durable are they under low voltages?
