Recently, compact systems seem to be all the rage. Even someone used to ATX might consider switching to Mini-ITX. But is it about performance or saving space? ATX offers more expansion options with its spacious layout, while Mini-ITX systems take up less room. So, which do you think offers a more balanced and future-proof system? Or is it just a matter of preference?

I’d recommend Mini-ITX for the vast majority of users unless you’re a hardware enthusiast or need extreme expandability for professional workloads. My daily driver is a B650 Mini-ITX build for office work, light gaming, and security research—it’s more than enough. The board even includes a gigabit LAN port and a 2.5G USB NIC, unlike some mini boards that cut essential ports to save space. Manufacturers really need to listen to user feedback on that. That said, ATX’s expansion advantages are unmatched in certain scenarios. When I used an ATX board for penetration testing, I could plug in a dedicated GPU, 10G NIC, and USB expansion cards without conflicts. But the trade-off is footprint and noise control—no matter how optimized the ATX case, the airflow can’t match Mini-ITX’s compact design. Nowadays, ITX cases can even fit 360mm AIOs, and the thermal performance blows away the massive "iron tower" builds of the past. So unless you genuinely need extra PCIe slots or drive bays, Mini-ITX is the future—small footprint, low power draw, easy deployment, and the ecosystem keeps improving to rival ATX in user experience.
