CPU performance can't be reduced to the simplicity of "more cores" or "higher GHz" alone, because everything depends on your use case. For me, the primary criterion has always been tasks that require precise timing and synchronization. For example, when developing VR games in Unity or Unreal Engine, the render thread doesn't really benefit from more than 4-6 cores—so I strike a good balance with Intel’s Core i7 or AMD’s Ryzen 7 series. But cache size is just as critical: a CPU with 32MB of L3 cache loads assets instantly in games, while a 16MB model leaves you staring at a loading screen. The manufacturing process (5nm vs. 7nm) actually has a major impact on power efficiency and thermal management. When I was running a 7nm Zen 3 processor in my own PC, I expected only a ~10% performance uplift from a 5nm next-gen chip—but what I really gained was not having to mess with the cooling system and maintaining system stability during long render sessions. So if your budget is tight, it makes more sense to prioritize your use case—like opting for a CPU with 20% more cores for video editing—rather than investing in just a 5% newer manufacturing process.
