What's the impact of high refresh rates like 144Hz, 240Hz on performance when buying a gaming laptop? Is the difference noticeable in both gaming and general use? Are there any side effects like temperature and battery life? Can you share your experiences on this?

Compared to the standard 60Hz displays we're used to, refresh rates of 144Hz and above make a huge difference in gaming smoothness. When playing Counter-Strike on my old laptop with a 60Hz screen, I felt like I was losing track of my mouse movements, but on my new 165Hz panel, tracking movement is so much easier. Even when games run at the same FPS, 144Hz+ displays deliver a much smoother image. Of course, upgrading to 240Hz doesn’t linearly boost performance, but for competitive gamers, response time is critical—and so is heat, just like with a 3000RPM disk. My case’s 240Hz laptop hits 85°C during intense sessions, but the cooling system keeps up. For general use, dropping the refresh rate to 60Hz can extend battery life by 30-40%, which is a big deal for those who carry their laptops around often.

Thanks for bringing this up. Do you think refresh rates beyond 144Hz (like 240Hz) are just hype in the refresh rate debate, or do they actually make a noticeable difference?

144Hz and higher refresh rate displays provide a clear sense of motion fluidity in games, especially noticeable in competitive titles. However, they also increase power consumption and heat output, which can drain your laptop's battery faster during long gaming sessions.
