What does refresh rate do in gaming monitors anyway?

I'm still not quite sure about the importance of refresh rate while gaming. What kind of differences does a higher Hz make in the image? Does anyone know? I think there are others like me who confuse refresh rate with FPS too 😅

Man, I was confused about this too, bro. Refresh rate actually shows how many times the monitor refreshes the image per second, meaning it accurately reflects your FPS without desync, especially important in competitive games. For example, in CS2, you can literally see the difference between 144Hz and 240Hz, my dude.

Man, when I first bought a gaming monitor, I couldn't even tell the difference between refresh rate and FPS. My old monitor had 60Hz, and even if I hit 120 FPS in-game, it didn't feel smooth at all. Then I got a 144Hz panel, and bro, my whole playstyle changed. Games felt like they responded faster, and the delay between my mouse movements and what showed up on screen vanished instantly. Like in Valorant, you can see an enemy behind cover and fire instantly, whereas on 60Hz you might think you're shooting from behind and waste 2-3 bullets. The real magic of high refresh rate hit me when I tweaked my settings. Once I set the monitor to 144Hz and kept the game around 144 FPS, it was like the screen was taking 144 photos every second. The smoothness is next-level—you've already felt the jump from 30 FPS to 60 FPS, right? Going to 144Hz makes that difference between 50 FPS and 150 FPS feel a million times more noticeable. Refresh rate is basically how fast your screen "refreshes," and FPS is whether the game engine can keep up with that refresh rate. If your monitor's Hz and your game's FPS aren't close, you get serious input lag from unrendered frames. My advice? If your budget allows it, at least get a 144Hz monitor and match your FPS to it—then you'll really feel the smoothness.
