What's the difference between IPS and VA panels?

Last year, when I was buying a new monitor, I spent almost months researching the difference between IPS and VA panels. Eventually, I got the chance to experience a friend's 27" 1440p VA panel in person—my first impression was "wow, the contrast is amazing!" The deep blacks and vibrant colors really highlight VA's strengths. However, even with a 5ms response time, dealing with ghosting issues while gaming was frustrating, especially in FPS games where moving characters left trails on the screen.
Later, I switched to an IPS monitor (LG 27GP850), and while the color accuracy wasn’t as striking as VA, the 1ms response time and zero ghosting made gaming performance incredible. When watching movies, though the blacks weren’t as deep as VA, the color transitions were much smoother. In the end, I decided that if you're into e-sports, IPS is the way to go, but if you mix gaming and movies, VA (as long as you can tolerate ghosting) might be the better choice.
