Recent improvements in refresh rates now exceed 240 Hz, meaning the workload on the GPU doubles, especially when running games at 1440p or 4K resolutions. Compared to older models that were limited to 144 Hz, the difference isn’t just in visual smoothness but also in power consumption and temperature. Therefore, it’s crucial to review the cooling capacity of your graphics card. If the GPU can’t maintain 100% of its base clock, the difference will turn into noticeable stuttering despite the high refresh rate.
On the HDR front, improvements in brightness range (from 300 nits to over 600 nits) and wider color gamut (from DCI-P3 to Rec. 2020) make the experience closer to reality. However, the actual benefit is only realized when the GPU can consistently provide a 10-bit or 12-bit output. Compared to old VA panels that offered high contrast but less color accuracy, modern IPS panels provide a better balance between response time (from 1 ms to 4 ms) and color accuracy, which becomes even more important with FreeSync and G-Sync syncing up with VRR requirements.
