My brother, I'm absolutely sure I experienced the same thing—last month, I was almost in the exact same situation. My outdoor cameras caught three people breaking into my place around 3 AM. They were there to grab my desktop PC tower and an external 3TB hard drive, and the footage shows them just standing there with bags in hand. Luckily, I reacted fast, called the police, and neighbors helped out—they scattered while trying to escape.
I think these kinds of incidents are becoming way too common now, especially in neighborhoods outside the city center. Now, I don’t keep my hard drives at home anymore; I hide them in a secret closet at a trusted relative’s place—only one or two people know where it is. If you’re carrying a backup drive, it’s best not to keep it on you all the time; store it somewhere safe instead. Never trust the word "secure" just because there’s a camera around—those are two different things.
