Just recently switched from console to PC and the headphones vs speakers war has me going crazy. On one hand, headphones are more private and cheaper, but speakers fill the room with stereo (supposedly better for game sound effects). Is it worth the hassle of setting up 5.1 if most games are optimized for 2 channels? Has any of you tried the magic of surround sound in something like a horror shooter or an open-world game? I love the idea of feeling every step behind me in the game, but does the difference really stand out that much? Think tight budget but no immersion sacrifice—what would you flip out over in my situation?

Well, look, a few months ago I switched from regular speakers to decent gaming headphones (the HyperX Cloud II, by the way), and honestly, the experience changed more than I expected. Yeah, speakers always give more "magic" in movies or games with spectacular ambient sounds (like those from FromSoftware or Resident Evil), but in the end, how often do you actually listen to those effects in detail? With headphones, every footstep, gunshot, or whisper (like the stealth steps in *Hitman* or *Dishonored*) comes through with a clarity that speakers just can’t give you, not even with a well-set-up 5.1 system. That said, if you game with a partner or group and want everyone to hear the effects (or if you love the physical immersion speakers provide), then a 5.1 or good 2.1 setup makes a difference. But watch out, because a decent setup of good-quality speakers + subwoofer already costs as much as three good headphones, and in the end, most games end up in stereo due to optimization. I, for one, went back to headphones for practicality and because the precision of the sound saved me from more than one scare in horror games or competitive shooters.
