Guys, one of the things I overthink the most when setting up a sound system is headphones. Since they don’t have as strict certifications as speakers, the options can be overwhelming. Generally, which type of sound signature do you prefer based on the environment (studio, home, office)? Also, how do you evaluate parameters like frequency range, impedance, and sensitivity? What method do you usually follow when choosing headphones?

Technical details like frequency range, impedance, and sensitivity are akin to "color calibration" on monitors: while a wide frequency range (20Hz-20kHz) covers everything, you need to pay attention to sensitivity (dB/mW) for high impedance and compatibility with different devices.

When choosing headphones, the primary focus should be on the use case. For example, when listening to music at home, I prefer models that emphasize bass and detail—I went with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra because of its top-tier noise isolation and balanced bass. However, in a studio setting, accuracy is critical; open-back models like the Sennheiser HD 600 are preferred because their frequency response is nearly flat. For office use, both isolation and comfort matter—Gear4Music already prioritizes sound isolation, which is a key factor. As for frequency range: 20Hz–20kHz is the range the human ear can detect, but this doesn’t mean the same thing for every model. Low-impedance headphones (16–32 ohms) work well with mobile devices, while high-impedance ones (250 ohms+) require a powerful amplifier—many people in my circle overlook this. When it comes to sensitivity, models exceeding 100dB/mW typically deliver higher sound pressure. But remember, these specs complement each other; high impedance alone doesn’t always mean "better sound."
