When choosing a CPU, the first thing you should consider is your use case. For desktop gaming or heavy rendering tasks, a model with at least 8 cores and high clock speeds (like the i7-13700K) is a solid choice. But if you're running 3A-level applications even on a desktop, you might want to look into 12-16 core Threadripper CPUs.
For laptops, TDP and thermal performance come into play. A low-TDP i5-1340P or i7-1360P will suffice, and in an ultrabook, a 15W processor can easily deliver 10 hours of battery life. If integrated graphics like Iris Xe are enough, light tasks like pen-based video editing are no problem.
When it comes to thermal performance, even monster-cooled desktops can push the i9-13900K to 250W and 100°C while still delivering top-tier performance. On mobile, however, keeping an 8-core chip under 28W and around 85°C is ideal. In both categories, pay attention to cooler quality—some manufacturers don’t even include one.
