I'm considering going with the Core series when building a new system. How significant is the performance difference between different generations and models? For example, do desktop and mobile (laptop) usage require different approaches? Is it more sensible to go with a model that has a SoC integration, or is it better to go with a dedicated graphics card? I also need some tips on thermal performance and power consumption. What do you recommend?

Here are a few key points to consider when choosing a CPU. While the differences between generations aren’t huge, newer ones (like 13th or 14th gen) tend to offer better efficiency and power consumption. There are also differences between desktop and laptop use—desktops benefit from higher TDP models (e.g., i7-13700K), while laptops often need mobile versions (e.g., i7-1370H) due to thermal limits. You mentioned SoC-integrated graphics—if you don’t need high performance (for basic office work or web browsing), Iris Xe or UHD Graphics will suffice. But for gaming or graphics-heavy apps, a dedicated GPU (like an RTX 4070) will give much better results. Cooling is also crucial for thermal performance, especially if you plan to overclock—water cooling is usually better than air cooling in that case. I went through a similar decision process and upgraded to an i5-13600K. I’m happy with both the performance and thermals.
