Hey man, I wanna buy a laptop for work but I'm not sure what to focus on. Is performance more important or portability? How much RAM and SSD capacity should I get? What should I look for in battery life, especially since I travel a lot? Also, how do I balance price and performance? What would you prioritize?

Last year when I was in the marketing team, I had to buy a new laptop and I was in the same dilemma you're facing now. At the time, I had 3-4 criteria in mind: 1) I needed to handle PowerPoint, Excel, and Chrome from 9 AM to 6 PM, 2) It had to fit in my suitcase for intercity meetings 2-3 times a month and last long enough to avoid charging 2-3 times during those trips, 3) It shouldn't break the bank. I initially went for a model with an M.2 SSD, 16GB RAM, and a mid-range processor, thinking it would be sufficient. The first few weeks were fine, but after a month or two, Chrome started struggling with 50+ tabs, and the laptop sounded like it was breathing heavily. A quick check revealed that even with a quad-core i5, the new Photoshop CC versions were pushing it to its limits. For my next purchase, I focused directly on the RAM + SSD + CPU triangle. 32GB RAM (since you're also thinking about office work, multiple browsers, and Teams, 16GB is barely enough), 1TB NVMe SSD (essential for the system and projects), and a 6-core i7/i5 (go for Intel's 12th or 13th gen for better battery life). I prefer a 14-16” FHD matte screen, even without AMOLED, as it reduces glare during outdoor meetings. For battery life, aim for 60Wh+ models, especially those with 80Wh+ can last 6-8 hours. I went for the Dell Latitude 7440, which has a 75Wh battery and gave me 7 hours of use at 100%. As for price-performance ratio, don't leave your budget vague. Narrow down your list based on the core criteria (RAM, SSD, CPU) first, then compare prices by brand. For me, it was important not to get lost in hardware jargon—just search for "32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, i7-1265U, 60Wh+ battery" and let the rest sort itself out.
