Last month, while rendering my brother's bitsoun project at home, I realized the gravity of the task. A combo of AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with GTX 1660 was sufficient for simple preamble models, but waiting 40 minutes for each frame of the animations was getting on my nerves, so I upgraded to NVIDIA RTX 4070 with the same CPU. With GPU rendering, each frame dropped to 8 minutes, and the workflow really sped up.
About two years ago, I built a workstation for a mid-sized animation project (3D character with physics-based simulation and hair dynamics) using an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and an NVIDIA RTX 3090. At first, I assumed the GPU would handle most of the rendering work—after all, in Blender or Octane, CUDA cores are the bottleneck. But I quickly realized that in complex scenes with many polygons (over 10 million) and heavy shaders (subsurface scattering, volumetrics), the GPU got bogged down in texture and lighting calculations.
My mistake was looking at the problem one-sidedly. While the GPU is unbeatable for pure ray tracing and final photo scenes, the CPU comes into play for previews, simulations (fluids, smoke), and complex node networks (attributes, geometry nodes). I had to shift priorities: use the GPU for final rendering but outsource simulations (with 8–16 threads) to the CPU.
In the end, the project ran best with a hybrid strategy: GPU for final frames (using OptiX in Blender), CPU for physics engine cache (e.g., FLIP simulations with FlipFluids for 2–3 second buffers). It was also crucial to store cache files on a fast NVMe drive—otherwise, even the Ryzen 9 became a bottleneck. My advice to others: analyze your pipeline carefully! An RTX 4090 alone won’t make you faster if your software doesn’t fully utilize the GPU slots.
