Hot-swap sockets let you change switches without soldering, giving you the freedom to try out different feels. Open-source firmwares like QMK and VIA push customization even further—key mappings and lighting setups can all be managed through a single config file. Custom keycap sets, low-profile designs, and wireless protocols are also trending choices. I think this trend will keep growing with more community-made parts and standardized modules. From my experience with hot-swappable mechanical keyboards, they feel a lot like tweaking VR tools used in virtual experiments— the faster and simpler the swap, the more freedom you feel. Unlike traditional mice that require soldering switches in place, hot-swappable boards let you test different switches (like Cherry MX Red or Gateron Ink Black) in minutes, which is way more straightforward than modding VR controller buttons that often need 3D printing or complex scripting. When it comes to software, QMK and VIA offer flexibility most VR SDKs don’t— with QMK, I can load a single config file to change everything from key layouts to lighting effects, while in VR environments, you often have to tweak each scene individually. Still, there’s a lack of unified hot-swap standards (like socket sizes or RGB support across models), which needs more standardization— much like how we need common component interchange standards across different VR platforms.

Hot-swap sockets are convenient for easy switch replacement, but the board-side mounting can sometimes loosen. Using high-quality Kailh sockets with a thicker plate helps stabilize the setup. Currently, the lack of standardized PCB sizes and mounting shapes between modules is a downside, so choosing a universal PCB with a common size (like TGR-series) makes future upgrades easier.
