We're looking to get either a monitor mic or a stand-alone one—what do you guys prefer to work with? There are three common connection types: traditional XLR, simple USB, and the old-school but still functional 3.5mm jack. Which one do you find more reliable and higher quality? Why? Any experiences to share?

USB vs. XLR vs. 3.5mm jack—if I don’t mix these up, which cable can I just plug into my sound card and forget about? USB mics are plug-and-play easy, but does going XLR give me more control in the end?
I'm leaning more towards USB these days—it's convenient and cheap, especially if you don't want to deal with extra equipment. Do you already have a specific device in mind?
