Which do you prefer: studio environment or desktop recording? I'd like to hear your preference for USB or XLR microphones. Which would you invest in and why? In terms of setup ease, sound quality, price-performance, which do you find more important?

I couldn't resist upgrading to an XLR microphone after sticking with USB for so long. Once I made the switch and connected it to my existing setup, the sound quality improvement was night and day compared to the "plug-and-play" convenience of USB mics. USB mics do have their perks for desktop recording—just plug into your laptop, no need to worry about audio interfaces or phantom power, and they’re great for podcasts or solo recordings. But in my studio setup, when I zoomed in on the recordings, the noise from my desktop fans was so bad I couldn’t even make out the audio. With XLR, though, I could tame the hiss with the preamp settings. When it comes to price-to-performance, a cheap XLR mic chain can end up costing about the same as a high-quality USB model, which slows people down from making the switch. My advice? If you're just doing desktop recordings for now, stick with USB. But if you want that crisp, pro-level sound in a proper studio setup—where every detail matters—then investing in XLR is worth it. Yeah, you’ll have to deal with cable management and phantom power separately, but the sound quality is undeniably superior. I started with a Firstone TLM102, then moved up to a Focusrite Scarlett and Rode NTK combo, and each time the jump in audio quality was so noticeable that I kept thinking, "I should’ve done this sooner."
