A cardioid polar pattern is when a microphone's most sensitive area is shaped like a "heart." The highest sensitivity (0 dB) is at the front of the microphone (12-00 o'clock), about -10 dB from the sides, and drops to -20 dB from the rear. So if you place the sound source in front, ambient noise from the sides and rear is significantly reduced. That’s why cardioid mics are great for vocals, solo instruments, or isolating a single source in a room. An omni-directional pattern picks up sound equally from all directions (0 dB in every direction), making it ideal for capturing room ambience and reflections—but it also picks up background noise just as much. A figure-8 pattern captures sound equally from the front and rear while reducing sensitivity from the sides by about -20 dB. This is useful when you want a clean separation between two sources (like two vocalists recording side by side). In practice, using a cardioid mic with the source just 2-3 cm away and positioning the mic so unwanted reflections (like walls or speakers) are in the rear helps minimize echo and external noise.
