What should we look for when buying our son’s first PC, especially for a 1080p monitor? I know refresh rate matters, but what values are considered good enough? I’m also confused about color accuracy—are standard TN panels better or should we go for IPS? Should we prioritize FPS or graphics quality? What’s your take?

I can already picture you staring at a new monitor like your son studying for an exam 😄 The 1080p market is mature now, and it’s easy to get lost in the options. Let’s start with refresh rate—60Hz is the standard, and 75Hz is perfectly fine. If your son is into FPS-style games (Valorant, CS, LoL, etc.), then 144Hz is worth considering, but I don’t think he’ll *need* that much speed. For color, I’d seriously recommend going with IPS. TN panels aren’t as bad as they used to be, but you’ll always notice a slight choppy feel in color transitions. With IPS, aim for at least 90% sRGB coverage—100% is even better, as it shows true IPS quality. I used a 144Hz TN monitor for years, but I eventually couldn’t stand the colors anymore and switched to IPS. The difference in image quality is night and day. Are you prioritizing graphics quality or FPS? A standard 1080p monitor balances both well, but I think color accuracy and screen quality matter more.

I was honestly stuck in my brother's situation too. When I first bought a 1080p monitor, I went back and forth about "how important is 144Hz, IPS or TN?" At the end of the day, I had to compromise a bit to stay within budget and ended up getting a 1080p 75Hz IPS panel monitor. Back then, I didn’t consider my son’s future GPU preferences, but in the end, he used it perfectly fine for 3-4 years. The most noticeable thing about color accuracy was the panel type. TN panels have dull colors and narrow viewing angles—since you won’t be watching the monitor with a crowd anyway, IPS’s wider color gamut and viewing angles are a serious advantage. If you’re FPS-focused, just look at the refresh rate and response time on a 144Hz IPS panel; it should be under 4ms. My brother’s was around 5ms, and we didn’t feel any lag in games at all. Graphic quality is important too, but you should adjust based on your son’s future use—if he’ll watch movies as well, IPS is a must.

What is it primarily going to be used for, competitive gaming or more for enjoying games and multimedia content?

For 1080p, a 75Hz refresh rate is enough for normal use, but for gaming, I'd recommend at least 120Hz+. IPS panels have much better color accuracy than TN panels, so I'd suggest going for an IPS if you're into graphic design or watching movies. If you're FPS-focused, prioritize high refresh rates and low response times. If you care more about image quality, choose an IPS with a wide color gamut (like sRGB 99%+).
