When I was picking out my son's first monitor, it was a lot like your situation now. We ended up going with a 24-inch 1080p IPS panel mainly because its pixel density is around 91 PPI, which looks sharp enough at a typical viewing distance of about 2 meters—no noticeable graininess in text or games. If you bump the resolution up to 27 inches at 1080p, the pixel density drops to around 81 PPI, and sitting a little closer can make things feel slightly blurry, especially UI elements and detailed shooters. As for refresh rate, I went with a GTX 1660 Super paired with a 144Hz monitor. While the GPU can't quite hit 1080p 144Hz at max settings, it still manages over 100fps on medium, which feels smooth in practice. If you're planning on a higher-end GPU (like an RTX 3060 or better), you can easily push past 1080p 144Hz even on max settings, and you might even consider enabling G-Sync/FreeSync to eliminate tearing. So, when choosing, focus on screen size and PPI, panel type (IPS has better color and viewing angles), and how well the refresh rate matches your GPU—this way, your kid's first gaming PC can balance visuals and smoothness.
